Need any mulch?

Our neighborhood is on a former Naval Air Station and is in a process of transformation. One part of this process is the removal of old/diseased trees and chipping them up into mulch. It has been used to cover walkways in the sommunity garden, the non-profit plant nursery, and other bare, muddy areas.
One also sees piles of mulch all around the base.

About a year ago a sandwichboard sign appeared bearing the mesage "No more mulch PLEASE!" , moving to various locations as needed.
At Christmas time a flyer for a Christmas tree pickup was distributed, bearing a small paragraph: Trees recycled by Boy Scout Troop 11 will be turned into mulch and used to beautify areas of Alameda Point" Oh no! we residents thought.
In January the sandwich board message was changed to read "NO MULCH WILL CALL POLICE !!
What will happen next? How will this saga evolve? Only time will tell...

  • Does the mulch from the diseased trees transfer diseases to the soil in the community garden?

  • The community garden had raised beds because of possible soil contamination from the navy. Fresh clean soil is put inthe beds and the mulch is used to keep the weds down in the paths around the beds. From time to time a bunch of vounteers come and have a work day and spread mulch or construct new beds or work on the shade structure they are building out of straw and mud (this is much nicer than it sounds, there is a real technique they are using and I had to miss the class they offered on how to do it, I think I had just had a baby.

  • OOO! Is it like a sod house? I read all about those on the internet once. I was learning about creative ways they built homes on the prairie because there was no wood.
